Hellfest Festival 2024. Friday 28 June. It’s all go already and a storming set from Brit outfit Saint Agnes starts the day with a roar. No chance of sleep here as the band play like their lives depended on it and earn their place on the huge main stage. Big things are coming for them.
Polyphia have exploded on the scene following their big breakthrough via viral YouTube videos, the young quartet showing dazzling skills on their chosen instruments.
Owing much more to jazz and funk than the Metal that splinters through their material, they are an odd fit in a Heavy Metal festival but there’s enough loud guitar to win over the crowd.
Rightly, though, the audience is embracing their different approaches and who doesn’t like something that’s alternatively chilled or dance-friendly on a very warm afternoon?
The tattoos are there, the patter is there too and the crowd surfing crowd seem to be lapping it up prior to the priapic thrills of Steel Panther.

Japanese sensations Lovebites brought their own fire to the scorching day, the quintet looking demure but attacking their instruments like banshees.
Another point should be made, too, regarding the slickness of the changeovers here on the six big stages on site. No fuss, no long waits, just five minutes between bands, and it’s a dream. With the layout, too, you can catch brilliant sets by While She Sleeps or the incredible Textures before the glorious barrage of Karnivool. With so much to see, it’s going to be another very long day.
