Hellfest 2024. Friday 28 June. Fear Factory may have had a storied past, but they still take no prisoners in a live setting. Never as staccato as other Industrial Metal bands, there’s a buzz saw swing to what they do, but it’s done with a finesse.
Dino Cazares peels out some of the most underrated riffs in Metal, and singer Milo Silvestro has fitted in superbly since joining last year to replace long-term vocalist and linchpin Burton C Bell.
Jawbreaking numbers pummel the audience but do so with a smile and the whole is a cathartic exhibition.
After the face-melting blast of Satyricon, the raucous Metal of Clawfinger and the old-school thrash of legends Biohazard, the choice between Stoner Godfathers Fu Manchu (who else has a song called Weird Beard) or Machine Head was a dizzying one.
Fortunately, though, a sublime set by artful and classy Prog Metallers Pain Of Salvation was an easy choice. Stunning musicianship, soaring melodies and skyscraping highs made this one of the best sets of the weekend.
Really, you had to be there.
Things were kicking off though in Warzone as Ice-T brought the power to the people with a polemic and incendiary, the artist sticking a middle finger up to those who would doubt.
He still has so much to say and does so in an uncompromising way that means he’s still angry and still fighting the system. The world definitely needs more Ice-Ts and Tom Morellos.
MetalTalk drift off back into the night and off to the train station while our eyes still ring and our eyes recover following the relentless high of The Prodigy. What a way to close a very long day.
