Lacuna Coil / Italian Metal giants release special hometown live lockdown show

We all know the very real pain, and suffering COVID-19 has brought to our planet these last 18 months. Life as we knew it quite literally changed overnight. Friends, family members and millions of others suffered at the hands of this microscopic killer. As I write this, things aren’t back to normal, and I seriously doubt that the normal we once took for granted will ever return.

Lacuna Coil – Live From The Apocalypse (Century Media)

Released Date: 25 June 2021

Words: Robert Adams

Anyway, enough of the doom and gloom already, this is a music website, and I’m writing an album review here. All bands and artists couldn’t tour – a severe loss of earnings for all concerned – so thinking caps were donned and solutions sought. For many, an online live show was the way forward. For Lacuna Coil, they decided to go down that route BUT chose to do it their way.

After releasing their wonderful Black Anima album in October 2019, plans were afoot for the tour to accompany this release. Then the world stood still.

A monumental occasion

After much planning, Lacuna Coil regrouped and arranged a special hometown show from the Alcatraz Club in Milan, broadcast to the world online in September 2020. It was an amazing show and a monumental occasion. Vocalist Andrea Ferro told MetalTalk, “on the one hand, it felt awkward to play a huge empty room, but, on the other hand, it felt great to finally reconnect with our fans at home and with the people working behind the scenes.

“A lot of people enjoyed the show – it was definitely a one-off event loaded with a lot of emotions and feelings. Live From The Apocalypse is an opportunity to offer a new release to our fans while the COVID-19 crisis is still a real thing, affecting them and us.

“The live album represents a unique moment in our career (and life) that will be forever remembered as that one time we literally rose from the Apocalypse.”

The band put on full production and played their Black Anima album in its entirety, along with a few favourites. The album also comes with a DVD of the original Livestream, so you can see it and hear it anytime you like.

It is a glorious album and once your ears get accustomed to the lack of crowd noise – as there was no crowd – subtle variations from the studio versions make themselves known.

Cristina Scabbia said, “Looking at the sand gliding down through the hourglass. Apocalypse is factual and actual in today’s pandemic, though we couldn’t foresee this when we wrote it. The separation, the solitude, the confusion, the resilience. We keep on fighting for our will to survive.”

Live From The Apocalypse is a wonderful album and should nestle amongst your other Lacuna Coil albums in your collection nicely. Not only as an album to continue your collection but also as a reminder of that time the world was turned upside down.
