Born Of Osiris / Through Shadows Is A Crushing Cinematic Return

Born Of Osiris are back, and they are not here to whisper from the void. They are tearing straight through it. With Through Shadows, the long-anticipated follow-up to 2021’s Angel Or Alien, the progressive Metalcore heavyweights return at full throttle, wielding sharpened guitars, seismic rhythms, and a new level of emotional and technical depth. This is not just another entry in their discography. It’s a milestone.

Born Of Osiris – Through Shadows

Release Date: 11 July 2025

Words: Ash Nash

Opening with the blistering Seppuku, the tone is set immediately. This is cinematic, crushing, and meticulously arranged. Born Of Osiris have always flirted with the cosmos, but here, they sound more grounded and focused than ever.

The production is pristine, allowing every layer to breathe in-depth, from the sweeping synth textures to the razor-edged guitars of Lee McKinney and Nick Rossi with majestic flourishes that are everywhere: lightning-fast tapping runs, harmonic bends, sweeping leads, and dizzying interplay that never descends into chaos. This is all channelled with intent, purpose, and a sharp eye on the bigger picture.

The title track, Through Shadows, stands as the emotional and thematic anchor of the album. Combining brute-force riffing with soaring leads, the track explores resilience in the face of internal darkness.

Ronnie Canizaro has that sweet and savoury duality with crushing growls intercut with emotive, clean vocals that elevate the band’s signature intensity into something deeply personal. Meanwhile, drummer Cameron Losch continues to prove why he is one of the tightest in the game, laying down polyrhythmic grooves and shifting time signatures with jaw-dropping finesse.

The album thrives on contrast and evolution. Fans of The Discovery’s futuristic chaos and Angel Or Alien’s melodic refinement will find plenty to savour here.

Through Shadows acts as a bridge between those worlds, and nowhere is that synthesis more powerful than on Activated, a genre-bending banger featuring Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath. It is a standout moment that fuses Born Of Osiris’s technical roots with post-hardcore emotion.

The track builds on atmospheric synths before plunging into a groove-laden onslaught, the vocal trade-offs between Canizaro and Chamberlain injecting fresh energy into the band’s already so honed sound.

The War That You Are is another defining cut, groove-driven aggression with tight, syncopated riffwork and a commanding vocal performance, showing off the band’s ability to be both brutal and hook-laden.

Similarly, Torchbearer and A Mind Short Circuiting burst with kinetic, cybernetic energy. The former leans into an almost sci-fi palette of tones and textures, while the latter channels Meshuggah-like chaos through glitchy electronics and spiralling, off-kilter grooves.

The technicality on display throughout Through Shadows is staggering, but never gratuitous. Every note, every rhythm shift, and every ambient layer serves the emotional arc of the album. From the mechanical precision of Losch’s blast beats to the ghost-note-laden breakdowns and arpeggiated leads, Born Of Osiris have tightened every screw in their machine.

Closing track Blackwater brings the record to a haunting, atmospheric conclusion. It trades velocity for gravity, layering ambient synths and mournful melodies into a slow-burning finale that feels like both a breath and a reckoning. It is a bold closer that proves the band is not afraid to pull back the curtain and reveal something more vulnerable.

Through Shadows is an album of contrasts: light and dark, fury and fragility, machine and soul. It does not just deliver on Born of Osiris’s legacy—it expands it. Technically dazzling, emotionally resonant, and relentlessly forward-thinking, this is one of the band’s strongest releases to date.
