Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Friday. It’s a quick dash to the Sophie Tent for an emotional farewell to Andy Whale. The Legendary drummer is playing his final DeathCollector show on his 60th birthday.
Bloodstock Festival 2024
Catton Park, Derbyshire – Friday 9 August 2024
DeathCollector
As ever, Whale’s powerhouse engine anchors a lunchtime Death Metal feast as DeathCollector roar through a crunching set that bristles with fire.
Singer Kieran Scott burns, growls and cajoles the crowd who respond with an energy that is impressive so early in the day. If it’s old-school Entombed-style Death Metal you want, then this band should bring it in spades.
They have the songs, drawn from the album Death’s Toll, and whilst Scott is the focal point, it is the driving riffs of Mick Carey and Lee Cummings that cause the damage.
With Whale departing, the band ensured a huge send-off and chants of “Andy, Andy” echoed around the tent in a fitting finale for a Metal hero.
Grand Magus
It’s been a while since the Swedes have been on these shores. But with a new album due shortly and a UK support slot with countrymen Opeth in the spring, the trio of JB, Wolf and Ludwig play a show that reminds us why they are so loved.
They may be reasonably static on stage but it is the riffs and power that they deliver which make them such an addictive option. Big songs roar across the field, prompting thousands of fists to punch the air.
New song Skybound is greeted like an old friend, and it is now added to anthems like Steel Vs Steel and Ravens Guide Our Way.
A masterful display demonstrating once again why the world needs this band.

Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
