Thirsty Quireboys have released 10, 7 And Possibly 6, a tribute to late Quireboys co-founder Guy Bailey featuring Spike on vocals. The second single from God Bless America – Best of Thirsty is out now on digital platforms and limited-edition 7-inch vinyl, coinciding with The Quireboys’ UK tour dates.
The song also opens the album, but its role in the project goes beyond the tracklisting. Originally planned as a one-off tribute, it prompted further recordings that brought Bailey’s guitar work and Spike’s voice together in a posthumous collaboration.
“Our opening song both live and on record. A killer guitar riff with a great lead vocal. Mesmerising drum fills and a helter skelter guitar solo,” says bassist and keyboard player Chris Johnstone. “Guy would have absolutely loved it!”
From A Single Tribute To An Album
Spike’s first take on 10, 7 And Possibly 6 convinced Johnstone and producer Chris Kimsey, known for his work with The Rolling Stones, to encourage further sessions. The initial recording became the starting point for the wider God Bless America – Best of Thirsty project.
The song draws on Bailey’s songwriting partnership with poet and lyricist Irina D. Their collaboration began in 2014, combining his melodic writing with her stories inspired by novels, poetry and real histories. Long-time Thirsty collaborator Lynne Jackaman also features on the track.
Its cryptic title points towards the Ten Commandments, with the release inviting listeners to consider how many might be broken after a single look.
The accompanying video follows Spike alone on an underground train. The announcement describes a warm, desaturated vintage palette, with close-up shots and passing tunnel lights giving the performance a reflective setting.
