Silveroller: Honest Rock ’N’ Roll, From The Heart And A Debut Album On The Horizon

It has been an exciting year for Silveroller. Having just secretly signed their first record deal, the band made the triumphant announcement on stage at this year’s Maid Of Stone Festival, where they were on a definite high, their blues-soaked rock blending the best of Bad Company and The Faces.

“Silveroller to me are the dream band,” Jonnie Hodson, vocals, harp, “Rod-esque barnet and espresso snob,” told MetalTalk. “We play rock ‘n’ roll in what we see as the traditional way, loose hips, hollering vocals, organ crying for mercy, with a rhythm section that knows when to sit in the pocket and knows when to come crashing through the song. With screaming guitar solos with chunky, spacious riffs, this all gently nods to blues, soul, folk, country, gospel, etc. Roots music.”

Jonnie describes the band as a “rag tag mob of misfits.” Sammy Murdock, guitar and harmony vocals, “can and will quote Peep Show, and is a hater of moths. Drummer Joe Major is a “low-key MD, H Bar C shirt hunter, and can kill a man at ten paces with a glance.”

Lucas Tadini, organ, keys and harmony vocals, “can sleep on a washing line, and disappears without a trace after being stood right in front of you. A sassy, sassy man.” Jack Scully, bass? “Funk for days, harder than a coffin nail, probably fishing, also a hater of moths.”

The band are a “no fixed abode band,” Jonnie says. “Myself and Scully are from the People’s Republic of Liverpool, Joe is a Stockton boy originally, now living in Darlo, Dini is living in London but is originally from Brazil. Sammy, we think, is from Middle Earth, but he calls it Chesterfield, bless him.”

The official announcement of signing with Frontiers came in July 2026. “I think to tell the full story we would have to do it in volumes,” Jonnie said. “We released our first single late in 2023. We had been given the run around by a few people, promised a lot and let down a lot more, I think is the most diplomatic way of putting it.

“Once we finally grabbed the steering wheel ourselves, things began to move in the right direction. It turns out that being told you will not amount to much is totally subjective, and some hard graft and dedication can actually render rewards.

“Don’t get us wrong, there have been some steep mountains to climb, and some deep valleys to climb out of. But we are proud of what we are achieving, considering the vast majority is just us putting in hard graft.

“Having the right management has helped enormously. Things started really moving in the right direction last year, and having the right someone behind us, who believes in what we’re trying to do has been incredible.

“We’ve got a few people around us now who have bought into the ‘Silveroller thing’. We’re really grateful to them. Really, we want to make honest rock ‘n’ roll, from the heart, no nonsense, yano?”

This is a band that wants to play live, and Jonnie says they approach this in a traditional way. “We don’t use any backing tracks or anything like that,” he says. “We like to change things up a lot, extend sections of songs, get down and have a jam. We don’t use click tracks or go to a grid in the studio, either. We just play together live, let the song, the music breathe as we feel it should.

We’re really excited to get new music out. We’ve signed our first record deal with Frontiers Records, so we’ve got a great label behind us. We’ve just joined Eat Music Agency, too. It’s exciting times in camp Silveroller.”

The Silveroller lineup has a real mixture of influences. “For me, Paul Rodgers’ career is my first love,” Jonnie says. “Free and Bad Company, especially ‘Light Me Up’. I can never land on which of those groups I prefer.

“I’m a huge fan of the blues and soul guys too. I’m listening to a lot of Freddie King at the moment. Muddy is a big hero too. I really got buried in Dobie Grays album Drift Away recently. I really dig the contemporary guys as well, Rival Sons, Blackberry Smoke, Temperance Movement, Cadillac Three.

“But the influences really do stretch. Joe is really into country stuff, Cowboy music, as well as rock ‘n’roll. Dini brings a lot of South American influences as well as the staples of rock ‘n’ roll, soul, blues, gospel. Sam is really into Porcupine Tree and Zeppelin. I’ve nudged him towards Free and Kossoff’s playing as well, [laughs]. Scully is funk to the bone, loves soul, great blues player. He’s really got ‘the sauce’ as a musician. Him and Joe are both really into Vulfpeck. There’s a big variety of influences.”

The record deal with Frontiers is a proud moment for the band. “We’ve taken our fair share of lumps, and moments of ‘how the hell do we survive this’, and we’ve come out of it to the point of signing a record deal with Frontiers,” Jonnie says. “So, I’m sure, like a lot of bands, we’ve survived a fair amount and come out the other side. Signing the deal felt like a moment of ‘I’m glad we fought our way through the difficult times. Now, let’s celebrate by making the best album we can.’

“I think we did that, too. We didn’t have a lot of time in the studio, but I feel like we made the most of it. We tracked live. There’s not a million takes of stuff, so it feels raw from the desk mixes we got back. It feels very real, very honest, which is exactly what we wanted to do.”

The immediate future for Silveroller is having the album mixed and mastered. “Our good friend Ross from The Commoners is on mixing duty,” Jonnie says, “and we’re having it mastered at Abbey Road.”

Now we have to wait. The album will be out in March 2027, and the dates for the Love, Truth and Peace UK Tour are out now. “It’s a really exciting time,” Jonnie says. “New music is not far away, and we can’t wait.”
