Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Sunday. It has been seven years since the Swedes Amon Amarth last ravaged this part of the UK, and the result tonight is similar in effect and impact.
Bloodstock Festival 2024
Catton Park, Derbyshire – Sunday 11 August 2024
Amon Amarth
Amon Amarth are a band, who I first saw many years ago in a 300-capacity club in Cardiff, that have morphed into a huge machine. But beneath the stage show, the fire, the statues and the warriors battling on stage, it is still five men who bring accessible Melodeath Metal to thousands.
This performance is more polished, more rehearsed and even bigger in its bang than that previous headline set or the shows here before it. Amon Amarth have sculptured the ultimate Heavy Metal pantomime, and we lap it up.
Opening with Raven’s Flight and Guardians Of Asgaard, we get explosions, huge jets of fire and a light show that you can see for miles. It is brash, bombastic. Everything you want from Amon Amarth and a Sunday headline set at Bloodstock.
Leading the rousing anthems is Johan Hegg, alongside lead guitarist Olavi Mikkonen and bassist Ted Lundström founder members of a band now in its 32nd year.
We get everything you would want. Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags leads into Heidrun and War Of The Gods before the Vikings form the front line for the massive crowd row during Put Your Back Into The Oar. It’s spectacular from the flanks and must look even better from the stage.
The final song of the main set sees Hegg drain a huge drinking horn before Raise Your Horns leads to the double encore of Crack The Sky and the inevitable Twilight Of The Thunder God. It’s a fitting finale to a show that has everything. There are grinning fans across the arena, content in a finish that, for many, is the conclusion of a great weekend.
Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
