Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Sunday. While Amon Amarth left fans grinning across the arena, content with a finish that, for many, is the conclusion of a great weekend, for 5,000 more, there was one more treat to come in the shape of Satyricon.
Bloodstock Festival 2024
Catton Park, Derbyshire – Sunday 11 August 2024
Satyricon
For those who find Amon Amarth a little too theatrical, the opportunity to enter the darkness of the Sophie Tent one last time for some Black Metal is probably a relief.
Eight years since Satyr and Frost last played at Bloodstock, the band returns for an imperious headline set that sees fans spilling out to the edges of the tent.
Cloaked in semi-darkness, Satyricon enter the stage with Satyr flying a flag with an upside down cross firmly etched on it.This is not a happy, joyous occasion, but more a sombre, intense experience.
Satyricon pull from 2017’s Deep Calleth Upon Deep first, with To Your Brethren In The Dark, a fitting track given the low-level lighting. But between the strobes, blues and reds that bathe the stage, we see long-time touring members Steinar ‘Azarak’ Gundersen (a 25-year veteran on guitar), fellow guitarist Atilla Vörös, keyboardist Anders Hunstad joined by Frank Bello on bass.
Yes, the Anthrax man is a year away from his 60th birthday, but he is still a ball of energy, racing around like something possessed.
In a stellar set, Filthgrinder comes early, a rare outing from 1999’s Rebel Extravaganza, whilst Hvite Krists Død from 1994’s The Shadowthrone takes us right back to those early days.
Ultimately, it’s Mother North and a splendid K.I.N.G that round off a savage reminder that on their day, few can match the bristling intensity of this deceptive and clever band.
A fine climax to a weekend of huge success. Until 2025, then.
Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
