Kula Shaker are marking 30 years since their chart-topping 1996 debut K with K-Reinkarnate, a complete new recording of the album by the original line-up. Recorded live and entirely in analogue, the release arrives on 5 February 2027 through the band’s Strange F.O.L.K. Records label.
The British psychedelic rock band have also shared a newly recorded version of Govinda and announced a UK and European headline tour for February and March 2027, concluding at London’s Troxy on 20 March.
Revisiting K 30 Years Later
Rather than reproducing their original studio performances, Crispian Mills, Alonza Bevan, Paul Winter-Hart and Jay Darlington returned to the songs as they play them today. The sessions took place at Middle Farm Studios, where the band recorded live to two-inch analogue tape. Peter Miles and Ash Howes mixed the record, having previously worked on the band’s 2025 album Wormslayer.
“That’s the whole meaning of the word reincarnate,” the band said. “It’s not about replicating K but summoning its spirit by playing it live and giving it ‘new flesh’. Exploring how it still lives and breathes in the present, and how all those songs have evolved naturally over thirty years of live shows.”
The original K entered the UK chart at Number One in 1996, propelled by singles including Tattva, Hey Dude and Govinda. Its blend of British psychedelia, Indian musical influences and Sanskrit chanting helped give Kula Shaker a distinctive identity during the Britpop era.

Govinda And The Band’s Early Influences
Discussing Govinda, which draws on the devotional singing tradition of kirtan, Mills recalls its long connection to the band.
“Govinda has been with us since day one,” he said. “It was the first song we ever played, (blagging our way onto the Krishna stage at Glastonbury 1993), and in many ways it’s the song that came to define us.”
Mills also credits George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord as an early influence and recalls learning more about kirtan through Himangsu Goswami and his family, whose musical tradition extends across generations.
Unreleased Songs Return
The project also gave the band the opportunity to revisit material from their original 1996 sessions. Shower Your Love, Hush and Drop In The Sea were recorded during the making of K but were not included on the finished album. They now feature in the expanded running order of K-Reinkarnate.
Another discovery was She’s So Free, an unfinished 1996 recording featuring piano, acoustic guitar and lead vocal. After recovering the original tape, Kula Shaker added new instrumentation and vocals in 2026, bringing the group’s past and present performances together on one recording.
“What you hear now is the band of 2026 playing along with its previous incarnation, thirty years before. It was a wonderfully weird experience.”
Reflecting on the project, the band say: “K was the soundtrack to our youth; a magical time when anything is possible. We hope you enjoy the reincarnation, and hope it helps you stay young at heart.”
