Hellfest 2026. Clisson, France. Mike Ness and his Social Distortion guys could not have chosen a better song than David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel to start the proceedings. A song they casually walk on stage to, for what will be a great hour, filled with attitude and a lot of the crowd singing with them.
It all starts with Born To Kill, from the latest record of the same name. The reaction from the crowd only comes to show how appreciated that album is. Deservedly so. If you have not checked it out yet, you absolutely should.

There is a specific swagger to everything this band does that is simply impossible to fault. Ness leads them, effortlessly cool, Gibson Les Paul with a rose on the headstock in hand, and after a day of tons of processed guitar sounds, not that there is anything wrong with that, this is a journey back to proper basics.
A guitar that simply sounds awesome through an amp and a Marshall speaker.
They do not mess around much, just going through picks from what is a great catalogue. However, at one point, the Social Distortion leader mentions how much they love doing this, and describes touring as 23 hours of bullshit, worth it for that one hour of fun.
Even a bra comes off and is waved in the air, for the first time today. Not the show one would predict that would be happening at.

And, if I am to sound like social media, Ball & Chain is truly a vibe. And Story Of My Life gets a massive reaction, as well as a serious pit. It is because this punk and rock ‘n’ roll melange is raw and, most of all, honest, which is probably why so many musicians are fans.
At one point, before Don’t Drag Me Down, Mike Ness even apologises for the United States’ behaviour, calling it one of a bully, and expressing yet again the band’s attitude of inclusivity.
A perfect ending to a great first day.
