Paul Mario Day / Original Iron Maiden Singer Dies At 69 After Battle With Cancer

In what can only be described as yet another terrible blow to the music industry, MetalTalk are sad to report the passing of the original Iron Maiden frontman, Paul Mario Day, at the age of 69.

Paul, who had been battling cancer for some time, passed away on 28 July 28 2025. It was Paul and his family who wished that the news was not shared until after his funeral, which took place yesterday, 7 August 2025.

Despite being seriously ill, Paul Mario Day recorded and released his final single, Unwanted Guest, a moving, yet fearless look at his own impending death.

The accompanying video, created by MetalTalk and Paul, features photos from the Cart Day at the Cart & Horses in 2019, when Paul Mario Day performed with Airforce and Buffalo Fish, delivering spirited sets of songs during the afternoon.

Born on 19 April 1956, Paul Mario Day first came to prominence as lead singer for Iron Maiden, joining the band in December 1975 at the age of 19. With his tenure ending in October 1976, he went on to form a band called MORE.

After five albums and a Monsters Of Rock appearance, the group disbanded for a period of time. Day then formed Wildfire, releasing four albums, before joining a re-formed Sweet, featuring Andy Scott, Mick Tucker, Phil Lanzon and Mal McNulty.

After marrying his wife, Cecily, he relocated to Australia, departing from Sweet in 1988. He then appeared with Aussie bands Crimzon Lake and Buffalo Crows, as well as guesting on a number of different tracks, including Airforce’s Band Of Brothers.

“We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden’s first-ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away,” Iron Maiden said. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul’s family and friends. Paul was a lovely person and a good mate. Rest in peace, Paul.”

In a touching tribute, Wildfire’s Jeff Summers took to social media to say:

“Unfortunately, it seems that my dear friend and musical colleague in Wildfire Nwobhm has finally lost his battle to the beast. Bless you, Paul.

“We made some very sweet music together and had many, many laughs along the way. Your music with Iron Maiden, MORE, Sweet and of course Wildfire will live forever through your magnificent voice. It would have been wonderful to have worked together one more time. RIP.”

The Sweet’s Andy Scott also said on social media. “In 1985 Mick Tucker and myself put together the first new line-up of Sweet after the hiatus of the original band. We needed a singer, and when Paul arrived for the audition, we looked no further.

“Our first dates were in Australia, total sell-outs, which boded well for the future. Europe followed suit and three sold-out nights at the Marquee in London produced a live album, video and DVD. Live At The Marquee did well in various charts around the world, and Paul’s vocal performance has stood the test of time.

“PMD was the original singer with Iron Maiden and had a stint with the band More before joining Sweet. He passed away peacefully at his home in Australia. My deepest condolences to his wife, Cecily, and family and friends.

“A sad day for all Sweet fans. Andy x.”

All of us at MetalTalk wish to extend our love and condolences to Paul’s wife, Cecily, as well as all of his family and friends.

RIP Paul Mario Day – 19 April 1956 – 28 July 2025.
