Hellfest 2023. “You wanted the best? You got the best!!” As the classic intro tape begins and the fans press forward, there really is no alternative to Kiss. Currently on their End Of The Road tour, they are every inch as bombastic and fabulous as you could want them to be.
Opening with Detroit Rock City and ending with Rock and Roll All Nite, this was still every sparkling inch a proper Kiss show. Now in their 70s, Gene and Paul are still the icons every new and old fan wants them to be.
I Love It Loud saw Gene spitting fire while God Of Thunder found him spitting blood. Eric Singer accompanied Beth on piano and, with solos for bass, guitar and drums, it was the full-on festival show.
A special mention should be made of the sound mix, which may just be the best ever heard at a festival. Whether this really is the end of the road or not, there’s no spectacle that comes close to Kiss in concert and one suspects there may never be one.
