Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Thursday. It has been a testing time for Evergrey, a relatively easy trip from Gothenburg taking fifteen hours instead of two. Having conquered issues with planes, trains, and automobiles, the quintet were obviously determined to make the time on stage count.
Bloodstock Festival 2024
Catton Park, Derbyshire – Thursday 8 August 2024
Riding on the critical and public acclaim of their latest album, Theories Of Emptiness, the Swedes were in buoyant mood despite the earlier tribulations. With new drummer Simen Sandes firmly ensconced in the band, this was the time to do what they do best.
Led by the towering presence of Tom Englund, the band have crafted a sound over fourteen albums that carries as much weight emotionally as it does musically, the pounding riffs matched by the soaring flights and deepest darks of the lyrics. With the airline losing all their equipment, everything was borrowed but with the passion displayed, absolutely nothing was going to stop them.
Metallica-heavy riffing, stinging solos, huge melodies and a rhythm section that drove it all with such precision and power, all melded to giant melodies, this is Evergrey.
Dipping into albums old and new, Falling From The Sun, Distance, and Eternal Nocturnal provide a rounded look at their output, the cherry-picked set one designed for the greatest impact. By the time that the triumphant Misfortune and then Save Us closed the set, the night was proof positive of the chameleon-like ability to switch from huge highs to heartbreak and back again.
Today’s journey may have been trying, but Evergrey snatched victory from the jaws of disaster and were utterly magnificent. Nobody does this better than them.
Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
