Darkest Era / Haunting Performance Lights Up The Sophie Tent

Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Friday. Despite the warmth which bathes the fields of Bloodstock in a glorious haze, it’s a dark and melancholic place inside the Sophie Tent as Northern Ireland’s Darkest Era extol their misery.

Darkest Era

This was a fine performance that saw curious people walking past, hesitate and then enter the Sophie Tent.

With nearly two decades of experience behind them, they look and sound confident without any arrogance. In fact, their music, which is drenched in Celtic mythology, is at times stirring and vibrant, blended with a crushing intensity that resonates and moves you.

They include songs from their spread of albums, all unfamiliar to me until this performance but soon to be rectified. Although they are missing Sarah Wieghull on guitar due to personal reasons, her replacement fills in ably.

Cohesive and compelling, it’s the mountain of Dwayne Maguire who dominates the stage. His vocals soar and swoop, stirring the emotions as a myriad of atmospheric creations swirl and slowly wither.

It’s a big set that confirms their higher billing, and apart from those who are using the tent merely for shelter, this is one of the most intense shows of the weekend.
