Dan Byrne / New EP Beginnings Bristles With Quality

The voice of Revival Black, the voice for Myke Gray, the voice who came close to the legend that is Nev McDonald at Stonedead festival this summer when singing those Skin classics on a Friday night, Dan Byrne is simply brilliant.

Dan Byrne – Beginnings

Release Date: 27 October 2023

Words: Paul Hutchings

I’ve seen him several times over the past few years, singing with Gray at Steelhouse, with his former band Revival Black, and taking the stage on his own at The Patriot. Whether at a festival in front of thousands or in front of 50 punters in a small club, he’s always sent the hairs on the back of the neck into a shiver. Such is the power and passion he delivers.

After a turbulent couple of years, Byrne is carving out a solo niche, and in Beginnings, he makes a huge step forward. It’s a magnificent EP, with four songs that are crisply produced, allowing him to show his versatility in different styles.

Death Of Me, the lead single and opening track, is huge, full of raw emotion, and one that slowly builds, increasing in atmosphere as the song develops. Complimented by superb instrumentation, it’s fantastic.

For those who have seen Byrne live in recent times, some of these songs are familiar in various guises. He’s played them acoustically, but having the full electronic beef behind him gives the songs extra guts and heft.

There’s a pop stomp to Like Animals, the hook catchy enough to appeal to far wider audiences. And then we have the sheer heartbreak of Easier. An absolute mountain of a song, with Byrne in full flow, complete with symphonic elements adding to the drama and occasion. The way the song sweeps through to the simple ending with an acoustic guitar is simple yet oh-so-good.

Proving that he’s got a rockier edge, Byrne’s smouldering delivery on Hard To Breathe is aided by a heavier backing, which allows him to unleash the rock god that lurks below.

It’s a fine ending to an EP that bristles with quality. It may only be 16 minutes in length, but it’s possibly the best 16 minutes you can spend.
