Cultura Tres Thrill Bloodstock with Sludgy Thrash on a Scorching Day

Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Sunday. The heat is increasing substantially by lunchtime, so a pint of cold cider seems appropriate whilst I head across to the Ronnie James Dio stage to catch the Sludgy Thrash of Venezuela’s Cultura Tres.

Cultura Tres

I had missed their recent UK tour, so it was on my list to find out a bit more about a band that have been in existence for nearly two decades.

By the finish, I have another band I need to spend more time with as I am drawn to the honesty of Cultura Tres. Led by Alejandro Londoño Montoya on vocals and guitar, who is a warm and open character with heartfelt between-song chat, the band thunders through a seven-song set which relies mainly on songs from the latest album Camino De Brujos.

Sludgy Thrash is an excellent description, as the band switch from steaming fast passages of play to spine-crushing slower segments.

Proxy War and Zombies stand out, as does a certain guest bass player, who is standing in for Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr, who is away on Sepultura duty.

In his place, the legendary David Ellefson, whose presence is immense and certainly causes a few with hangovers to double-take in the strong sunlight.

Ellefson is as unassuming as ever, laying the low end with drummer Jerry Vergara Cevallos, who is working so hard he breaks his pedal at one point, causing a slight delay.

Completing the line-up is guitarist and Alejandro’s brother, Juanma de Ferrari, who is content to take stage left and shred.

It all rolls into a highly enjoyable set which leaves me cursing my sloppiness in missing them in a more intimate setting. Next time.

Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
