At this point, The Underworld is fully packed, ready for the legends to come on stage and show everyone how Classic Death Metal is properly done.
This band has tons of history. Forming in 1983, they are regarded by many as the very first Death Metal band to exist. Originally from California, they helped pave the wave for the Thrash Metal scene with other bands such as Metallica and Exodus.
Possessed, however, stood out more as being branded more Death Metal with Jeff Becerra’s grunting vocals and more aggressive playing style. The lyrics, too, are based more on Satanism, clearly evident in their song titles.
As Jeff comes on stage, he is instantly met with huge roars from the crowd, and he could not look happier with the amount of support his band has received throughout the years.
He instantly greets the crowd and gives a number of handshakes to some lucky fans, including myself.
As the whole band comes on stage, it is not long till they show why they are here, to rock Camden Underworld to the ground!
They start the show with the instant classic No More Room In Hell, then Damned, and then Beyond The Gates.
At this point, Jeff is already on his third beer, clearly having a good time and enjoying the interactions with the crowd. After each song, there are clearly a big crowd of worshippers for the band, showing how much the Possessed had meant to them throughout all these years.
The rest of the band is just as energetic. We have Daniel Gonzalez and Claudeous Creamer on guitars, who are just so incredibly talented. They are constantly headbanging, even during solos.
It just shows how effortlessly they can play and show they are the true masters of this style of music. Not to forget Robert Cardenas on bass, his low heavy tone compliments the guitar tones while also providing backing vocals on particular tracks such as Storm In My Mind and Tribulation.
The band continues to play classic songs such as The Exorcist, Demon, Fallen Angel, and Death Metal. At this point, it is clear to see there is nothing stopping this band, and they have the brute energy to keep playing for hours on end.
At the end of their set, it comes to the encore, where they finish Burning In Hell.
Some people may think this band deserved to play at a bigger venue. But honestly, the Camden Underworld was a perfect venue to play as it provided raw energy and a pure connection between the band and its fans.
It’s been a long time since I have seen Legends such as Possessed be truly connected with and grateful for their fans.
