Luke Spiller has stepped away from The Struts arena swagger to share a slow, soulful take on the Slade Christmas classic Merry Xmas Everybody.
As the Yuletide season kicks in, the vocalist has released his version of the song across all digital streaming platforms, alongside a festive video. Rather than chasing the raucous singalong energy of the original, Spiller has stripped the arrangement back so listeners can lean into the warmth of the lyrics and maybe even steal a slow dance in the middle of the holiday chaos.
“Like so many of us, I have always loved Christmas,” Luke Spiller says. “For me personally, it is a time where I often travel back to the United Kingdom and spend quality time with my family after a long year of touring and seeing the world. I grew up listening to this song and have such great memories being surrounded by the people I love, celebrating the year coming to a close. I wanted to put my own spin on this classic and decided to strip back the music so people can really focus on the lyrics.”
Spiller also pays tribute to Slade, whose influence runs deep through British rock, Heavy Metal and glam. “Slade were an incredible band and have been a huge influence on my own musical journey, so I really wanted to do it justice. Merry Xmas Everybody!” he adds.
The release arrives following the release of Luke Spiller’s debut solo album, Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes And Wine. Written from the starting point of lyrics and titles rather than riffs, the record is described as an epically cinematic journey, drawing on dramatic, avant‑garde influences and the rush of love, heartbreak and beauty he experienced after moving to Los Angeles.
Spiller has made his name fronting The Struts, who exploded onto the scene in 2015 with their debut album Everybody Wants. With hits including Could Have Been Me, Kiss This and Body Talks, the band quickly built a reputation for modern glam‑rock swagger and massive live shows.
Their high‑energy performances have seen them share stages with The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses and Motley Crue, with Dave Grohl famously calling them “the best opening band we’ve ever had.” Since then, The Struts have released a string of acclaimed albums, including Young & Dangerous (2018), Strange Days (2020) and Pretty Vicious (2023).
Luke Spiller’s version of Merry Xmas Everybody is available now on all major streaming platforms.
