Hellfest Festival 2024. Sunday. The fourth and final day, and the sun is back to grace the masses at Hellfest with its almost unbearable warmth, the coolness and rain of yesterday’s clouds a distant memory.
One more day to stroll around the site, soak up the atmosphere and appreciate the details of things you may have missed before as you stare open-mouthed at now-familiar visions.
In actuality, there’s so much at the festival that you could spend hours just taking in the architecture, but that’s not what Team MetalTalk have flown over here for.
As much as we appreciate the setup here, the music is the magnet for us. As with the previous days, there is lots to get our teeth into, so here we go back into the inferno.
Having impressed so thoroughly opening for the Foo Fighters last weekend in London, it was a very welcome return catching HotWax again, the Kent trio bringing their cauldron of alt-rock and grunge to boil with a scene-stealing performance.
Showing equally big potential, sets from High On Fire, Neck Deep and Nova Twins showed a mix of veterans and newer talent able to easily handle the biggest of stages, having done their apprenticeship on the road.
As befits the weather, the sunny punk pop of Simple Plan and the more dramatic slowburn and fiery soul of Blues Pills are a gorgeous treat as the languid crowds build up energy levels ready for the rest of the day.
Frank Carter
Whilst legendary Irish punk Metal outfit Therapy? bring some channelled chaos to the Valley stage, over on Mainstage 2 superstar in-waiting Frank Carter leads The Rattlesnakes in an extraordinary display of crowd control and heart.
Creating a circle pit for the ladies in the audience and crowd surfing whilst singing may be regular tools in his armoury, but they are impressive nonetheless.
Alt Rock anthems like Self Love, Devil Inside Me and Crowbar are already modern-day classics. With potentially massive crossover appeal, there’s no reason why Carter won’t be filling stadiums within the next five years.
†††
Across the site, the stark set of ††† brought a shimmering and disconnected dark industrial curve to their aching electronica.
Weaving their singular sonic tapestry, Chino Moreno and Shaun Lopez bring something special that’s to be absorbed as much as witnessed. Invisible Hand, Ghost Ride and Big Youth are easy to get utterly lost in.
