Hellfest 2024: Bleed From Within and Slaughter To Prevail Dominate Day 1

Hellfest Festival 2024, Clisson. Thursday, 27 June. With so much crammed into a tight space it’s easy to get lost amongst it all, especially with so many people here. Going between stages can take time and perseverance but fortunately the twin main stages are side by side, making it easy to see the biggest of the bands.

Bleed From Within

Scots rockers Bleed From Within have certainly earned their place on the huge main stage, their propulsive Metal impossible to ignore. Singer Scott Kennedy is a compelling frontman, bringing muscle along with their titanic riffs and their balance of melody and muscle winning over the crowd.

Slaughter To Prevail

Quickly switching to the other side,  Slaughter To Prevail do not mess about with niceties, their brutal Metalcore taking no prisoners. Shirtless and covered in tattoos, singer Aleksandr Shikolai quickly removes his gold version of the band’s signature mask and leads the band and audience in a display that is nothing short of feral.

With longtime guitarist Jack Simmonds at his side, their set is incendiary, and when the vocalist jumps into the crowd to create the biggest wall of death seen in Hellfest history, it was certainly a moment to remember.

Kerry King

Kerry King looks like he could rip your spine out without a second thought, but all the Slayer legend really wants to do is lay waste with his guitar.

Capturing all that earthy, visceral thrill of his time in a quarter of the Thrash Big Four, the six-stringer brings a little hell to Hellfest, and the swollen numbers of people crowding down near the main stage have all come to soak up the fire.

Doing exactly what it says on the tin, Shrapnel is a blistering attack on the senses, and the space that brings the dynamics makes it even heavier.

Whilst Raining Blood is rapturously received, the closing title track of the recent album From Hell I Rise shows that King has never been more ferocious.
