They have been quiet for some time, although Häxan have popped up on the live circuit many times over the past few years, including Bloodstock in 2024. But it has been nearly five years since the debut album, White Noise, rocked our world. Whether you think it is demanding or not, the band’s dedicated fans have rightly been clamouring for new music.
Häxan – Death Of Me
Release Date: 23 May 2025
Words: Paul Hutchings
Death Of Me is finally here. Five songs that are short, sharp and punchy, stretched over 17 minutes. Yes, Death Of Me reminds us that Häxan are still alive and kicking, and they have pushed everything to 11 this time around, too.
“We know it’s been a while since our debut album,” vocalist and guitarist Sam Bolderson said, “and that’s because we were lucky enough that it kept us so busy with touring and being on the road. Finding the time—or headspace—to write just wasn’t possible.
“Some bands write on the road, in vans, hotel rooms, but that’s not us. We need to shut ourselves away and get stuck in. When we finally had the chance to do this, it took a little time to get back into the writing swing of things.”
Häxan may have taken their time, but there is no doubt that Death Of Me fires Häxan back directly into the crosshairs. The songs are big, bold, loud and proud. They have gone in hard.
Romesh Dodangoda’s production gives the band an accomplished polish, whilst the playing is impressive. Switching from hard rock to Heavy Metal throughout, this is an EP that is enjoyable from start to finish.
Death Of Me is the obvious opener, a riff-heavy, dark, brooding track which brings Bolderson’s vocals straight to the attention. It is a fine performance that continues throughout the album.
What is also noticeable is that Bolderson’s guitar work is as reliable as ever, whilst drummer Jess Hartley has upped the game, locking in with bassist Harriet Wadeson to keep the low end tight.
Whilst Häxan possess a distinctive and instantly recognisable sound, they have been able to mix it up and increase the tempo. The duo Sirens and EP closer Collide see the band’s heavier edge come to the fore, with the former song featuring a driving energy that echoes elements of Motörhead.
Quite the surprise, perhaps, but thoroughly welcomed.
In fact, it is the heavier style that is one of the catchiest things about Death Of Me. Bolderson’s excellent voice is crystal clear and soars over the driving riffs of Burn Alive and the crushing Collide. It is this increase in vibrance and power that is likely to garner them some more attention.
Heading out on tour in June, Häxan sound fighting fit. It may not be the second album we craved, but this is a heady fix that sates the appetite for the time being.
Hopefully, Häxan will already be crafting a few more songs for future releases. Until then, enjoy a fine return from the South Wales trio, who may well find that Death Of Me propels them into the full media storm.
Let’s hope so.
