Gun will be at Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow tonight, where they will be presented with the award for Best Album at The Specsavers Scottish Music Awards. Hombres was released in April this year and was described by us as an album that “makes you feel glad to be alive.”
“We are so deeply honoured to receive Best Album in Scotland,” Dante Gizzi told us. “his recognition means the world to us, and we’re grateful for the support and connection with the people and music community here.”
2024 is The Specsavers Scottish Music Awards 26th edition, and the evening is a flagship fundraiser for Nordoff and Robbins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity.
“We’ve had a long-standing association with Nordoff and Robins over the years,” Dante says, “and it’s been a truly phenomenal charity to be involved with. Their work with vulnerable communities, including those with disabilities, highlights the true potential of music to change lives in the most profound ways.”
It has been a great year for Gun, boosted by a Top Ten position for Hombres, their first charting album in 30 years. Trscks from Hombres were also chosen for the Samuel L. Jackson film Damaged.
The band have already started work on their next album, but before that, the business of finishing their 2024 tour is in hand, including the special closing date in Glasgow.
In August, I asked the brothers if, with everything that has happened in 2024, that last show in Barrowland Ballroom would be one big fucking party?
“Playing the Barrowlands is such an amazing buzz,” Jools said, smiling. “It’s amazing. It’s not just people from Glasgow, but people coming up from England, people coming from abroad, from Spain and Portugal and Germany and Sweden.
“It’s special, really special. For some reason, we always knock it out of the park when we’re playing that gig. Because it’s our hometown. Where we are doing this interview is only a stone’s throw away from the Barrowloads. We’re right in the heart of where the Barrowlands is. It’s just an amazing buzz. You feel like a proper rock star when you play that gig.”
There are plenty of reports that the recent Germany tour with Kris Barras went well. It is great for Gun to be able to finish 2024 out in style, as this has been an epic year for them.
But you know that fans mean a lot to the brothers and they are in the heart of all that is Gun. “Thank you for all your support out there,” Dante said, “and supporting the band.”
“I just really appreciate all your amazing support that you’ve given us,” Jools said. “Not just on this album [Hombres] but all the other albums that we’ve released. It’s been incredible and I think without you guys, we wouldn’t be doing it.”
Tonight at The Specsavers Scottish Music Awards at Barrowland Ballroom, Gun will also perform on stage alongside acts such as Soup Dragons, Twin Atlantic and TikTok star Calum Bowie.
