Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Saturday. Formed in 1987, Deicide are not regular visitors to these shores with 48 shows, including this one, a limited return. However, today they are here, beads of sweat rolling down Glen Benton’s forehead as he turns with his fellow bandmates and launches into When Satan Rules His World.
Bloodstock Festival 2024
Catton Park, Derbyshire – Saturday 10 August 2024
Deicide
It seems somehow wrong. Deicide blinking in the blinding sun as they sing their songs about Satan. It is an old-school set which cannot do anything but please the old-school Death Metal fans in the swollen crowd. Even Benton admits that “I do my best work at night,” much to the audience’s delight.
Standing in front of Benton, drummer Steve Asheim, and dual guitarists Kevin Quirion and Taylor Nordberg is quite the experience. The pulsation of drummer Steve Asheim’s double bass kick is such that you can feel the ground vibrating in the photo pit. It is the equivalent of being on a building site with no ear protection.
This is a full-force performance with very little chat between them, although when Benton does, it is self-depreciation as much as anything else.
The pit is flailing, all arms and legs punching the air. The wall of riffs, the searing lead breaks and the driving power of Benton’s basses all combine into a soundtrack which obliterates the field before it.
Once Upon The Cross gets the head banging, whilst the finale of Dead By Dawn, followed by Homage For Satan, is as brutal as you will see all weekend.
There may be some doubters who said Benton would not turn up, but we have proof, sore necks and slightly less hearing capacity than before. It was a fine appearance, one that many others and I had waited some time to see.
Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
