BEX is back, and she is bringing plenty of attitude with her. Following the release of fairies, her first new music in nearly a year, the UK nu-punk artist is preparing for her six-track concept EP Away with the Fairies, arriving in February 2027, alongside a newly announced tour.
For this week’s MetalTalk Lowdown, BEX tackles our 20 questions with brilliantly unpredictable results. From turning a platinum record into a cake stand to playing her best and worst gig at the very same venue, there is plenty to enjoy. We also discover why she cried over bananas at 2000trees, her rather unusual snack combinations and why being hungry is probably not the best time to approach her.
What’s the most Metal thing you’ve ever done off stage?
I rocked up to a party in November in London, head to toe in Metal chainmail. Yes, it was freezing.
What’s the worst gig you’ve ever played, and why?
The Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham. Not a single soul showed up.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played, and why?
The Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham. Not a single soul showed up. We got smashed, and belly slid across the stage while playing music really bloody loud.
Would you choose a platinum record or one perfect, legendary live show?
I want a platinum record so I can turn it into a cake stand and start my baking career.
What’s your greatest fear?
Being eaten by my manager’s dog after it’s wee’d on my feet.
What’s the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I have to be depressed to write good songs.
What’s the trait you most deplore in other musicians?
They are all depressed, and they write better songs than me.
Describe yourself in three words.
Aggressive when hungry.
What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Thai Sweet Chilli Sensation with a Cadbury Caramel Nibble on top and The Vamps, Meet The Vamps album blaring on the speakers, in my kitchen wearing the one hoodie and joggers that have not reached the washing machine in four years.
What does a great riff feel like to write?
Plays a great riff by mistake.
“Yooo, did you record that?”
“Nah, do it again.”
Spends the next two hours trying to remember what I played.
“BEX. That’s it.”
“Really? Uhh, I swear that’s already a song.”
What’s the worst thing a fan has ever said to you?
I love that you just stand on the stage pretending to play bass. Girls rock, I could do that.
What’s the worst thing a critic has ever said to you?
Just releases a new song. “So when can we expect more music from you?”
If you were not in music, what would you be doing?
I would be the world’s greatest fashion designer. Bigger than Louis Vuitton. But the music called first, so I had to turn down the millions of pounds.
What’s one album outside your genre you secretly love?
The Fame Monster – Lady Gaga.
When did you last cry, and why?
At 2000trees because I forgot my bananas.
What keeps you awake at night?
The whole world’s addicted to social media. Sarah making her husband’s dinner got six million views, while my song that took two years to create got ten likes and a well done from Uncle Bob down the road.
Riffs, royalties or recognition, if you had to choose?
Recognition. Without it there would only be unheard riffs.
How do you want to be remembered?
She was a cool musician, but God, did you taste her baking?
What’s the most important lesson the road has taught you?
Don’t read the title of the song that’s just come on. You will crash.
What happens when the music stops?
My brain goes BRRRRRRRR. YOU’RE A FAILURE. YOU’RE THIS. YOU’RE THAT. BRRRRR.
