Unto Others / Pushing the Heavy Metal genre beyond the expected

Unto Others will release their new album Strength on 24 September via Roadrunner Records, their first with the label they signed to in June 2021.

The band formed in Portland in 2017 under the name Idle Hands, the band raised eyebrows in the Pacific Northwest, and their debut album Mana, which followed 2018’s EP Don’t Waste Your Time, was very well received.

“Our last full length came out over two years ago, and much has changed, including the band and I, our name, etc.,” says frontman/guitarist Gabriel Franco, “so I consider this a reintroduction of ‘us’ to those who connected with our music in the past, as well as a debut for the many who haven’t.

“We did our best, and that’s all we can do. So out of the frying pan and into the fire, I think we have all been frying long enough.”

Strength. “Innovative combination of goth, rock and Metal.”

Strength was recorded between June 2020 and April 2021 at Redwood Studio in Philadelphia and Falcon Studios in Portland, and Franco told MetalTalk that he is proud of the results of a challenging process. “I wish I could say it came to me like a bolt of lightning,” Franco says, “but the record was a process. A challenging process to write, record and mix.

“It was ten months from beginning to end and the most time I’ve ever spent on an album. You can decide if that’s good or bad. Arthur [Rizk (Code Orange, Power Trip)] did a great job giving the record a heavy organic sound, and it was a privilege to work with him.

What we have at the end is something I am extremely proud of, for better or worse, and a constant reminder to myself that we don’t do things because they are easy. We do them because they are hard.”

Given the high quality of the first three songs released, along with Brock Grossl-directed official music videos, the future for the band is exceptionally bright. This is something that Roadrunner Records SVP of A&R, Dave Rath, agrees with.

“Having Unto Others join us at Roadrunner Records feels like a ‘welcome home’ to a family member we’ve been waiting for, for a very long time,” Roth told us. “Unto Others’ innovative combination of goth, rock and Metal brings the genre to entirely new and unique places.

“They are pushing the genre beyond the expected to create a blend of heavy, dark, melodic songs combined with traditional Metal we haven’t heard in quite some time. We are incredibly excited for this band to be part of the label’s storied legacy.”

Unto Others will join Behemoth, Arch Enemy and Carcass for a massive European autumn tour, kicking off on 28 September in Dublin, Ireland and running for six weeks through to 7 November at Rockefeller in Oslo, Norway. Tickets are available from untoothers.us
