CKY proves they still have what it takes to put on an all-out awesome rock show at The Garage in Glasgow with support from Jools.
CKY – Jools

It is in the middle of their big UK tour at the moment. Even though original frontman/guitarist Deron Miller is long gone, Chad Ginsburg did a mighty fine job of carrying the torch and proving CKY are still relevant.
The only support act for this night was Jools. Originally, it was meant to be Fiend Without A Face with the awesome Brent Hinds from Mastodon, but unfortunately, Brent passed away in August this year due to a motorcycle accident. He will always be remembered for being such an awesome musician and a damn cool dude. May he rest in peace.
Jools
So we had Jools to fill the boots for Brent, and they were some mighty big boots to fill. An original band from Leicester who meshed some garage rock and post punk, Jools had a hint of some serious diva attitude.
The songs were electric and full of energy, with groovy riffs that commanded the crowd to move along in rhythm with each beat. The dual vocals from Mitch and Kate perfectly matched each other, whether it was full enforced screams or soft harmonising ballads.
The majority of the tracks were just a lot of fun. Clearly, Jools were there to have a good time and give the UK a full flavour of their eccentric sounds.
Although there one serious song that Mitch had dedicated to his father, this one struck me to the core. Mitch had some unbelievable energy during this track as if he had put every inch of his soul into it.
The rest of the band did a great job of keeping the songs in place, whether it was their fat-sounding, tight drums, right down to the catchy rhythms of the guitars and bass.
A great show that put them on the map in Scotland for some hard and exciting garage rock. Well done guys, we hope to see you here again soon.
Not long after, it was straight to business with the main act that everyone was waiting for.
CKY
CKY is a band that has had some serious history. They had become big with the help of Bam Margera and his crew. I remember hearing so much about this band during the good old jackass days.
It was going to be an interesting night to see if they could still produce the high-octane energy they had provided in their early days.
As soon as they entered the stage after a long intro, they kicked straight into action with Chad doing pretty much all of the vocals.
People may have different opinions of Chad’s vocals, whether they can still match and outdo Deron’s when he was in the band. Honestly, I think he did a fantastic job, and his vocal styles still suit the band well. Some songs I think he did a better job on, such as Flesh Into Gear and one of my personal favourites, Inhuman Creation Station.
On bass, we had Mike Leon, the phenomenal bassist from bands such as Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy. He fit in so well with CKY and had the funny attitude to match. One of the least serious bassists I have seen, he provided some great entertainment on stage and some fun facial expressions.
Mikes bass tone was completely huge, a full on fuzz tone that matched with the guitar sound perfectly. You could hear it so clearly, and it provided the necessary OOMPH with the rhythmic riffs. As a bassist myself, it was a treat to hear the bass so loud and prominent rather than just being married in the mix.
On drums, we had no other than Jess Margera, Bam Margera’s brother, who had been in the band since the very beginning. His beats were powerful yet extremely clear in the dynamic range. He provided the much-needed backbone to allow CKY to keep its groove in a very cool way.
The set was extremely fun, covering a large amount of songs from their entire discography. Chad’s guitar tone still matches the exact sound you hear from the records, which was satisfying and a nostalgic treat from my earlier teen years.
Of course, they played the classic 96 Quite Bitter Beings, which I think is everyone’s favourite track and probably the first song we all heard from them.
That concluded the night as the band said farewell after 16 tracks, onto the next part of their UK tour.
I had a fun night with some good company and good vibes all around. Make sure you see this band live before their tour ends, you will regret it.
Well, Chad and CKY, you managed to keep the name of CKY alive and well.
CKY play Corporation, Sheffield, tonight, with dates in Norwich and London to follow.
