Florence Black closed an emphatic 2023Â with a show at The Scala, Merthyr Tydfil. Moving into 2024, the band have today released the title track from their second full-length album, Bed Of Nails, ahead of a headline UK tour in February.Â
“We are so excited to release the second Florence Black album, Bed Of Nails, on 2 February,” the band told us. “Thank you to everyone who has pre-ordered the album and bought tickets to the tour. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from fans and press for the singles we have released so far, and we can’t wait for you to hear the rest of the album.”
As well as The Scala, MetalTalk caught the band at Steelhouse, Maid Of Stone and Hellfest festivals in 2023. They also played Resurrection and Sweden Rock Festival, as well as Planet Rockstock. You can read all our Florence Black coverage here.
But what can you expect from the new album? MetalTalk has been spinning it in the office, and we will have a review out soon. But, before that, the singles released so far should have plenty of people’s mouths watering.
Earlier single, Warning Sign, was a tantalising example of a melodic approach that has attracted lots of love online. “The song is full of powerful imagery and metaphors,” the band said. “A candle bleeding light suggests that something is slowly dying. Being on the back roads suggests being lost and alone. A lot of the lyrics lean towards finding the strength to stand up for yourself and to learn from your mistakes.”
Warning Sign is another great example of how the trio work well with producer Romesh Dodangoda. “We had an amazing time in the studio recording it with Romesh,” the band said. “He has helped us to create the exact sound we were aiming for, and we believe that we have achieved exactly what we had imagined the album to be.”
Don’t Hold Me Down is a total stomper that showcases the wonderful riffs that Florence Black often works with. “[It] is a song about how our love and desires can hold us back from what truly is good for us,” the band said. “Not letting go of relationships, our work habits could make us neglect our loved ones, and substance abuse can lead to self-neglect. We are very proud of this song.”
MetalTalk’s Georgia Brittain was at the shoot for this single, which marked yet another step forward for the band. “The music video is also a great step forward for us,” the band said, “as we have always either done them ourselves or had friends to help out. Craig at Digichemistry really helped us bring our idea to life and is a true professional.”
You don’t just have to listen to us, either. Look Up was described by a punter as a “song on another level. It’s musically amazing. The tone of the guitar is perfect, and the lyrics are hooky and catchy.”
“I’m shocked you guys aren’t more popular,” a fan wrote of Start Again. “It’s so good.”
There have been some great achievements by Florence Black so far, but you feel the best is yet to come. “Since our debut album release in 2021,” they say, “we have been really busy touring in the UK and EU. Alongside our busiest touring year in 2022, we had written and demoed more than fifty songs.
“We spent a long time selecting and arranging our songs and feel that they are not just our best to date but also the ones that show our development as a band. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved.”
Three weeks until the tour begins in Glasgow, and we are really interested to see how Bed Of Nails performs in the charts. “We’re looking forward to getting back on stage and performing live for you across the UK,” the band said. “Once again, thanks for your support with this release and for our band over the years. We will see you very soon.”
If there is any justice in the music world, then maybe 2024 should be the year of the Florence Black explosion.
