Die Ego have today released a video for the song Son Of Devotion. Filmed at their recent Signature Brew show, this gig marked the introduction of new drummer Bruce Praill which, as Diego Fardel told MetalTalk, marks a rebirth for the band.
Filmed in April, Diego says the Signature Brew gig was a great introduction to Bruce. “We had a really good show,” he said. “We had these cameras set up, so we thought let’s introduce a new member showing the band playing live.
“Son Of Devotion is from our previous record that came out a couple of years ago. But as things stand in the music industry these days, you put a record out, and it’s like a trillion bands on the same day. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who haven’t heard some of those songs.”
Released in March 2023, 74 Days Staring At The Void is a well thought out, wonderfully recorded album full of little bits of ear candy. It showcases Die Ego’s heavy, intense riffs and groove-infused drums, but it is also an album full of atmosphere.
Bruce Praill fits the drum slot perfectly. “It’s not easy to replace first a drummer and second a person as well in the band,” Diego says. “Because you go through different experiences, and you become friends. We had a good relationship with our previous drummer. We tried different ones, and it was hard. It was a long process.”
Bruce was recommended by another drummer. “When things are meant to be they’re meant to be,” Diego says. “The moment that we played together for the first time, the songs were there. He prepared for the audition very well. When we played for the first time, it was like we had played for a few years already. It felt great, and it’s a perfect fit for us.”
Image-wise, Bruce Praill fits in perfectly, too. He looks great behind the kit. “He’s very laid back and passionate,” Diego says. “But you respect his drumming. He’s got a good drum vibe. He’s technical. He can go fast or slow as our songs require. He’s only 23. I think he’s very accomplished for his age.”
As a three piece, the chemistry is there again, marking a rebirth of the band. Die Ego are writing new material. “Bruce is bringing a really good vibe to the new songs,” Diego says, “so we’re looking forward to it.”
The plan is for Die Ego to hit the studio this year, and again, the boys will deliver something that translates well into the live arena. “We try to keep that essence of live with whatever we do in the studio,” Diego says.
“That’s the main challenge. We have been doing this for quite a while in the band. The first record [Culto] came out five years ago. We have a ten year history, at least with Gabe [Scapigliati, Vocals and Bass]. The chemistry is there.”
Live, I find Die Ego are a must-watch. “All the world can talk about writing songs,” Diego says. “But when we are on stage, the whole thing is to enjoy the songs and be able to transmit that, feeling to the crowd.
“Some bands are way more technical, but they can be seen on stage standing still trying to be as perfect as they can be. Personally, it’s not the kind of show that I want to go see.
“I want to see a band transmitting their music and their passion, and that essence. I personally love being on stage. I can’t resist to headbang and interact with the crowds.”
As well as shows around the UK, Die Ego have also toured Italy. An acoustic single, Anywhere We’re Going, was released last year while the drummer search was on. “It shows a different side to the band,” Diego says. “But it still has the same vibe and the same taste.”
With the band in the early stages of preproduction, now is a great time to witness them live. Die Ego hit The Temple in Eastbourne on 4 July 2025, in an event showcased by the Eastbourne Music Collective. Featuring Shadowvale and 1,000,000 HOLY MOTHERS, this promises to be an awesome evening.
I can smell the sweat already.
