Wargasm / Vigilantes Soundtracks The End Of The World With Noir Fury

Milkie and Sam get their noir on in Vigilantes, the latest single and accompanying video from Nu-Metal/electropunk duo Wargasm. Channelling really heavy doses of The Prodigy, the track and its accompanying video delve back down well-trod paths for the band and their brand of neo-nihilism.

“Who the fuck do you think you are?” is the opening question, over distant sirens. Vigilantes is a confirmation of intent from a band which has been at the bleeding edge of London’s busy alt scene since they detonated onto it in 2020.

These two are rebels, literally without a cause, and that’s fine. In this world: “Some people wanna get better we just wanna get high.”

The track, heavy on the synths and rapid switches in tempo, is going to make a solid party track. I look forward to seeing what a DJ can do with this.

“Months and months of turmoil, love, hate, and passion has gone into Vigilantes,” Wargasm told us. “We have waited so long to release this for you, and with it, Wargasm are excited to be an unsigned band again.

“This is turbulence bottled, shaken, and injected right into your ear drums. Everything about Wargasm is energy. We hope you feel something.”

There is a heavy use of samples, very typical of Wargasm. If I have a criticism, it is that, where they have previously kept tracks pretty lyrically fresh, Vigilantes can get repetitive at times.

The video goes all in on the noir themes. Milkie and Sam are a neo-noir Bonnie and Clyde, screaming from behind a chainlink fence between distance shots of them silhouetted on the top of a building in a dark cityscape with searchlights and airships.

The pair are caught in torchlight in warehouses, caught at the end of a chase with cops. There’s a scene with a Balaklava that gives real sex with Semtex vibes.

They are not here for a cause. They are just here and have to deal with the painful reality of that, as they say, “I keep moving like a fucking machine.” I’m not sure if the machine is them or the kind of thing you would buy from Lovehoney, eh? ¿Por qué no ambos?

This is classic Wargasm. They have given up on the world, that is clear to see. I mean, why wouldn’t you? War, climate collapse, massive inequality?

This is punk that recognises that the first round failed. Those old ‘punks’ now vote Tory and shill for butter between episodes of Bake Off.

I am writing this in Kyiv, Ukraine. I can hear the anti-aircraft fire when the Russian drones are nearby. There is an air raid alert, where I am now writing this review.

This song is a great accompaniment to the end of the world as we knew it.
