Two Promoters One Tour / Hen & Chicken Welcomes Podcast Heroes

It is a phenomenon that is probably below the radar for most in these times of mass content, but for a couple of thousand listeners, Thursdays for the past 13 months have been immeasurably improved by the revelations on the Two Promoters One Pod podcast.

For those who are unaware, it is a warts-and-all podcast delivered in a relaxed and honest style by the promoters/organisers of three UK music festivals. Gavin McInally of Damnation Festival, and James Scarlett, who is a big part of the team that runs 2000 Trees and ArcTanGent.

Three different festivals in terms of fanbase and artists, but with enough of a crossover to ensure that content is relevant. It is a hugely entertaining podcast, with revelations that cover virtually every aspect of how these successful festivals are run.

From portaloos to towels, riders to the 80/20 finance split, each week, the podcast provides uncompromising detail. It has been a huge success, with the duo supported by around 100 fans on Patreon, as well as Ko-Fi.

Whilst Gav and James have already done a few Q&A sessions at Trees and ATG, taking the podcast on tour was a different beast altogether. But, as they do with everything else, on a balmy early spring evening in Bristol, the thought has turned into reality and around 150 excited fans cram into the Hen & Chicken in the suburbs of Bristol for the first night of the tour.

Sold-out signs went up on several of the shows weeks ago, and with a high-quality range of merchandise on offer, fans are queuing from doors to get their hands on the hot sauces from sponsor Lou’s Brews, the Curley Wurly t-shirt (you need to be a listener to get that one) and of course, the 2P1P towel.

Those who grab their swag early get a bingo card and pen, which allows you to participate in the traditional game but pick out the phrases that have become legendary on the podcast. “We. Go. Again”, “Amazing”, and so on.

The evening is a roaring success. The duo are naturals and although it is not a comedy night, one might not think so judging by the amount of laughter that comes through the evening. Divided into two sections, the first takes on some of the stories that cannot be aired on the streaming sites.

We hear about Temples festival, Gav and James’ worst festival experiences, runaway trailers and power cuts that threaten entire festivals. It is a laugh a minute, with the duo quickly easing into their natural good-natured sparring.

The second act sees the audience ask a range of questions which provokes even more interesting responses. With Bosskmain man Tom Begley tour managing and acting as roving mic man, it makes for another hilarious hour with Tom giving as good as he gets from the duo.

It is an evening that flies by, and a standing ovation is all you need to confirm that the idea to take this podcast on the road will be a success.

In fact, one wonders if there is anything that can stop these two now. For the time being, this is the hottest ticket in town and one which I can see being repeated again.

Two Promoters One Pod is released every Thursday on most streaming platforms. The show moves to Bush Hall, London, tonight. For more details, you can find their Facebook page here.
