Sisters Doll, The Thunder From Down Under, Hit Florida

Hot off the high seas and the Monsters Of Rock Cruise, Australian family band Sisters Doll kept the party rocking on land in South Florida on Sunday night, ending their time on the East Coast with a show at Crazy Uncle Mike’s.

Though the last night of the cruise festivities kept most awake through the night and likely less than sober, fans still showed out in support of the band of brothers, who clearly made quite a splash on the ship stages.

I can see why, as they put on two hours of full-throttle hard rock that had the local joint banging their heads.

Flanked by banners of an ethereal hatted doll woman, the four brothers of Sisters Doll stormed the stage to the first tracks from their latest album Scars, kicking off the set with Crawling Out Of Hell.

Though the show is a stop on the Scars tour in support of the new album- which hit the number eleven spot in Australia, the band’s setlist included a mix of songs from their 15-year history, as well as an eclectic mix of covers that showcased a number of influences.

In all of their originals, the harmonies and “Oh Yeahs” created an easy way for the crowd to get involved, like an immediate indoctrination to the band’s Doll Army, the proud title of their fanbase.

Every song feels as though it was written to be an anthem, a nonstop celebration of the rousing spirit of hard rock. Regardless of the size of the local stage, the power they brought to their originals sounded like they could have been playing to a crowd of thousands.

To me, that is the mark of a true rock band. One that can transform even the smallest of stages into their very own arena.

Throughout their 15 years of experience, Sisters Doll have carved a space for themselves within the KISS Army circles, working with former members and performing at events like CreaturesFest KISS Cancer Goodbye.

I could hear the influence of the original heavy shock rockers in songs such as Dollhouse, and their amped-up rendition of I Was Made For Lovin’ You was a seamless fit into their setlist.

And speaking of seamless fits, their song Strutt came as a highlight of the night, not only for its driving groove that lives up to its name but for the interlude of The Who’s Won’t Get Fooled Again in the middle.

Sisters Doll kept my jaw on the ground and my feet moving when they launched into a hard rock cover of ABBA’s Mamma Mia right after, which proved to me not only the musical talent of the band but their willingness to expand the horizons that defy expectations of your ‘average’ rock group.

To end the night, they fused together nearly ten of Queen’s greatest hits into one Wembley-level medley, launching from the harmonies of Fat Bottom Girls, carrying the headbanging through the middle of Bohemian Rhapsody and closing it on the peak of We Are The Champions.

Truly, this show was two hours of supercharged energy. From every corner of the stage, each brother of the Mileto family brings a fire to their performance, and whether by their genetic connection or through the music itself, there is a pure sense of chemistry onstage.

Brennan Mileto (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) is a classic frontman, complete with dance moves and crowd interactions that kept every fan engaged through each song. Austin shreds on lead guitar with a force that needed no dancing. It was in his face and hands that he felt and believed every single note he hit.

Youngest brother and newest addition to the band, Sage, had a constant groove on bass guitar, taking the main spotlight a few times but turning his space on stage right into centre stage whenever you looked his way.

And on drums, Bryce is the Aussie incarnate of Tommy Lee, tattoos bared and slamming the skins with a ferocious energy and wild smile.

The saying Thunder From Down Under is entirely applicable to this talented band of brothers, who are living out their rock ‘n’ roll fantasy across the world. As one of their recent album tracks anthemically broadcast, you can’t bring them down.

Out Of The Ashes

The night warmed up with South Florida locals Out Of The Ashes, who played through a mix of classic rock covers and original music. Lead singer Maria Serritella had an aura that blended Liza Minnelli’s showgirl attitude with Pat Benatar’s vocals, backed by a solid ’80s sound from the band.

Indeed, a cover of Benatar’s Hit Me With Your Best Shot found a place in the setlist. However, the stand-out moment from the band was the original power ballad How Do You Know. The song sounded like it was taken straight from the MTV era and could have easily found a place in the Benatar-Giraldo songbook.
