Rory Gallagher’s 1971 debut album is set to be re-released on 3 September as a 50th-anniversary boxset. This includes a new mix of the original album, plus a host of extras, including a 50-minute DVD of Rory’s first-ever solo concert, filmed in Paris for the Pop Deux television show.
With 30 previously unreleased outtakes and alternate versions, there is also a six-song 1971 BBC Radio John Peel Sunday Concert and four 1971 BBC Radio Sounds Of The Seventies session tracks, all of which have been mastered at Abbey Road Studios.
A 32-page hardback book features many rare and unseen photographs from British rock photographer Barrie Wentzell along with essays and memorabilia from the album recording, including hand-written song lyrics by Rory.
His brother and manager Donal Gallagher wrote exclusive liner notes, along with his long-time bass guitarist Gerry McAvoy (1970-1991) and photographer Barrie Wentzell. There is also a full 1971 interview with Rory by journalist Roy Eldridge.
The album was originally released in May 1971. Rory had not played live since Taste disbanded on 24 October 1970, but he embarked on a 16-date UK tour which included ten days touring in Ireland. There was also a short trip to Switzerland.
The album was recorded at Advision Studios in Fitzrovia, London and featured songs such as I Fall Apart, Rory’s second most-streamed song, Laundromat and Just The Smile.
Rory died in 1995, aged just 47.
