Bloodstock Festival 2024 – Friday. There is a buzz of anticipation within the Sophie Tent 20 minutes or so before Igorrr, the Friday night headliners, take to the stage. It is one of the most anticipated sets of the weekend.
Bloodstock Festival 2024
Catton Park, Derbyshire – Friday 9 August 2024
Igorrr
The French musician has expanded into a collective in recent years as his reputation has slowly morphed. With four albums under the belt, Igorrr have a wide discography to draw from, although unsurprisingly, it is the most recent album, Spirituality And Distortion, which forms the backbone of the show.
The lights drop, and a lone spotlight picks out Gautier Serre, as he takes his position behind the desk where he will conduct the proceedings. A bruising electronic beat starts the proceedings, the crowd already fully charged and bouncing as electricity crackles through the rammed tent.
A chunky guitar riff kicks in. As the band explodes into life, the harsh vocals of JB Le Bail rage as he races around the stage. Handbrake pulled hard. We then have the introduction of mezzo-soprano Marthe Alexandre, whose vocals are on another level.
From here on, it is a melting pot of chaos as classical blends with Death Metal, Industrial and folk. It is genuinely an aural and visual overload for the senses and something that will live long in the memory.
For the next hour, it is a swirling mass of carnage as Igorrr demonstrate exactly why so many have crammed into the tent to see them. A visually engaging spectacle backed by a relentless aural kaleidoscope.
For some, it is a bit much. But for those who endure, the likes of Camel Dancefloor, Himalaya Massive Ritual, and closing song Very Noise make it all worthwhile.
It is the end to an exhausting first full day and one that finishes on a huge high.
Bloodstock 2024 will be held over the long weekend of 8-11 August 2024. MetalTalk’s Paul Hutchings, Adrian Stonley, Paul Monkhouse and Keith Conlin will be reporting from Catton Park.
