I Want Blood: Jerry Cantrell Releases Spoken Word Versions

Jerry Cantrell, the legendary guitarist and vocalist behind Alice In Chains, has released a deluxe version of his latest solo album, I Want Blood. This special edition includes spoken word renditions of each track set to unique musical scores crafted by a lineup of renowned collaborators.

A Fresh Take on Heavy Metal Storytelling

The spoken word tracks offer a new dimension to I Want Blood, transforming the album into a compelling narrative experience. Producer Joe Barresi, engineer Maxwell Urasky, and a stellar cast of musicians—including Greg Puciato (Better Lovers, The Black Queen), Roy Mayorga (Ministry), and Gil Sharone (Stolen Babies, Team Sleep)—have contributed to these distinctive compositions.

Jerry Cantrell revealed in an interview that the idea stemmed from recording a spoken-word version of Vilified, which later evolved into a full-blown creative project.

“I thought maybe it needs some music or something,” he said. “Maxwell Urasky played around with it, and it sounded killer. Joe Barresi then suggested, ‘Man, you should do this with all of them.’ Before I knew it, we had a creative stew going, sending lyrics out and getting back incredible musical interpretations.”

Recorded at Barresi’s JHOC Studio in Pasadena, California, I Want Blood features contributions from some of rock’s biggest names, including Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), Mike Bordin (Faith No More), Robert Trujillo (Metallica), and Greg Puciato.

“A stunning set of new songs from this legend,” Sara Harding wrote in her review. “I do not use this word lightly.” Available in CD, digital, and multiple vinyl variants, the album showcases Cantrell’s signature fusion of brooding intensity and melodic brilliance.
