Running Wild shot to fame at the beginning of the German Metal scene in the early to mid-1980s after forming in Hamburg 1976 in and have since released sixteen studio albums, three live albums, five compilation albums, and six singles/EPs.

Their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery but they are credited with later inventing the Pirate Metal subgenre after they released their third album in 1987, 'Under Jolly Roger'.

From 1988 to 1992, for the albums 'Port Royal', 'Death Or Glory', 'Blazon Stone' and 'Pile Of Skulls & Mascquerade', Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics about pirates like Calico Jack, Klaus Störtebeker or the little-known Henry Jennings.
