Motörhead's cover of David Bowie classic 'Heroes' got its very first public airing this weekend and was revealed as next year's Wacken Hymn at the world's biggest and best Metal festival.

Motörhead Music are to release 'Under Cöver', an album of Motörhead playing cover versions, in September 2017 and the compilation includes the previously unheard version of 'Heroes' which was recorded during the 'Bad Magic' sessions in 2015 by Cameron Webb. It was one of the last songs the band recorded together.

A 75,000 strong crowd gathered in a mud-drenched Wacken as Alice Cooper put on a spectacular display which closed with his band's version of 'Ace Of Spades' for which bass player Chuck Garric took the lead vocal.

"This one's for Lemmy," cried Alice as a stellar performance was brought to a close with the Motörhead standard. Wacken organiser Thomas Jensen then took to the stage and addressed the masses.

Thomas stated during his 'Heroes' introduction:

"There can't be a Wacken without Lemmy, we all know that so we have the honour to present you the 2018 Wacken Hymn, which will be Motörhead's epic take on David Bowie's 'Heroes'.

"So let me tell you, Lemmy wanted this song, during the recordings of 'Bad Magic, the latest album... he wanted this song to be on the album.

"And let's make it that he can hear us when we are all singing it."

The song was then premiered, along with its official video as images of Lemmy and Motörhead appeared on the giant screens.

This is the complete, professionally shot, video of Alice Cooper's performance from Saturday in full. 'Ace Of Spades' starts at 1:14:48 and Thomas unveiling the first ever public airing of 'Heroes' follows immediately afterwards.

Phil Campbell told us about 'Heroes' when the release of 'Under Cöver' was first announced:

"It's such a great Bowie song, one of his best, and I could only see great things coming out of it from us, and so it proved to be. And Lemmy ended up loving our version."

"He was very, very proud of it,” added Mikkey Dee. "Not only because it turned out so well but because it was fun! Which is what projects like this should be – fun!"
