AC/DC have broken their silence on their decision to offer refunds to fans unhappy about Axl Rose replacing Brian Johnson for the remaining Rock Or Bust World Tour dates. The band have also confirmed that the videos we published yesterday of their rehearsals with Axl in Portugal here are genuine.

A spokesman for AC/DC told TeamRock: "The band made a decision to offer this. As they care about their fans and wanted to do right by them, they instructed local promoters to offer refunds."

A spokeswoman for the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) also confirmed via TeamRock that the band were not under any legal obligation to offer refunds: "Our CTSI lead officer for fair trading can confirm that there is no legal obligation for the ticket sellers to refund in this case. It is a goodwill gesture."

The AC/DC spokesman added that the local promoter had confirmed that a "small number" of refunds were given for Saturday night's gig in Lisbon: "They will be back on sale today and they expect them to sell out in half an hour. The audio was recorded by a Brazilian fan standing outside the site and it is Axl. The band have been rehearsing solidly for two weeks in Lisbon."

Our contact in Lisbon, a prominent member of AC/DC's touring company, has told us that all is extremely positive in the camp at the moment. He said: "After all the negative publicity and fans' backlash I think those that come to the shows will see a great feast of rock n' roll from two legends in Axl and AC/DC.

"Axl is walking around with a big smile on his face and I think this has worked out really well so far and he wasn't even on the radar to begin with. It's a shame it's not with Brian but this has sent a breath of fresh air through the AC/DC camp."

So the stage is set for what will be a historic 22 tour dates, literally. They're all ready to go in Portugal, three days before showtime. Our contact added: "Well done to all the crew riggers and locals who have been on hand to help unload this monster. Thank you, so just time to catch a few rays, a quick drink and some lunch, then off into the city for rehearsals."
