THE INTREPID FOX'S VIEW FROM THE BAR: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE...666
25 March 2014

"...and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six."
Revelation 13:18

I love this fucking town...I've spent all my adult life here, and I regard Soho as my home; physically and spiritually. The original building where the The Intrepid Fox stood, on Wardour St: a street rich in history from being the hub of the movie business in this country, to the iconic Marquee club. The geezers on Berwick St market who made me feel part of a community in my teenage years: "getcha luvly tomatoes, darlin'...going cheap, just for you..." The brasses and their red lights in the windows: a hint of excitement, a dash of danger. The thriving 'rainbow-striped' bars: the resilience of surviving a nail-bomb attack by a psychotic bigot.

Marilyn Manson being a miserable cunt at the WAG; 'Buttz 'n Spike's' at Gossips; St. Moritz club 'n Shuff; the incendiary 'Hellfire Club'; Wednesday nights at the Hippodrome; the king of clubs, The Astoria, hosting Friday nights 'Rockscene' and more; The Borderline and Pearl Jam; the world renowned Tin Pan Alley, home to music enthusiasts from all over the world; the 12 Bar Club and many drunken nights; 'Decadence & Disorder' at Sin; the camaraderie of The Crobar...My friends and colleagues who for 25 years ran all of the boozers in the centre of this great city of ours. Creating a magical, quirky, unique symbol of all that attracts people to London in the first place. The Sex Pistols and The Clash: Anarchy and London Calling. Rebellion, rock 'n roll and real people. What a city, what a life...

Then, like a virus, indiscriminately consuming, perverting and genetically destroying all in it's fucking path: "the giant, corporate conglomerate that has tentacles all over the world..." Cancerous cells. Re-writing synapses to the brain: dulling critical responses. The 'Tower', the jackboot and the hammer... I walk through the old Soho I knew and loved and see fancy restaurants, expensive clubs, brand after brand and boarded-up buildings: what happened to the writers, the artists and the musicians? The fantastic characters that defined the West End...When did individuality and creativity become a target on your back instead of a gift to be prized?...You could try and rationalise it to me from now until, well, the end of time, and I'll go "Fucking don't get it, man..."

The people who are the lifeblood of the area: displaced from work and home. Iconic landmarks reduced to rubble. An infrastructure of roads and utilities in chaos because of perpetual building works. Astronomical rents imposed by billionaires on small businesses, already struggling against a world recession, in order to force out those without the means or influence to stand up to them. A 'business improvement district' with the property development aimed at who? Yeah...you got it...Not me and you. Instead, the fuckers who want to live in a penthouse apartment with a fantastic view overlooking what once was our London. The fuckers who were never held accountable for playing Russian Roulette with our life-savings, our pension-plans and our homes. 140 luxury apartments: planning permission denied. 140 luxury apartments and 6 'affordable' flats: planning permission granted...

While we slip through the cracks that this 'society' has fractured beneath our feet...

The Devil comes in many guises, but none more insidious than the smiling face of "an all-encompassing propaganda that ideologizes its establishment as the culmination of history's progress". The New World Order: right here, right now...A totalitarian 'democracy' with the ability to simply control and manage information, thereby keeping us in the dark. Mis-directing us with tales of 'vanishing planes'; bombarding us with slogans and sound-bites designed to subtly make us believe that we need a new computer, a new car, a better life...

And the visionaries; the iconoclasts? Murdered, discredited and ridiculed...

But an idea, a value, a mere spark; always survives...

For our farewell weekend here at the Fox, downstairs THE LIVING DEAD CREW summon up the usual mix of the best in hard-rock, punk 'n metal. Upstairs in "THE BOM SHELTR", Thu 27 we have STEREO JUGGERNAUT+FUCKSHOVEL, Fri 28 we welcome back the fantastic FOUR WHEEL DRIVE supported by STATE VILLAINS+THE MARIANNA HOLLOW, and Sat 29 we have ENRAGED (Rage Against The Machine tribute) followed by club "LAST CALL", with some special guest dj's...and perhaps a little magic. Downstairs, on this final Saturday, we wanna get the whole pub headbanging to Slipknot...!!! The winner of this 'competition' will get a bit of Fox 'memorabilia' to take home as a little reminder of what a fantastic seven years it's been at this venue...

We'll be giving out loyalty cards for our many regulars who've supported us through the years: put 'em in your wallet and check out www.intrepidfox.com for details, cause we now have one week before our eviction from our home here on St Giles High St. Next Tuesday, on April Fool's Day, we shall be posting our final statement and we ask our many friends out there to please share. And as for the cunts who trashed our dressing room on Saturday. Nobody's all the way dead yet, but let's just say the clock is ticking...

Leaving you, for the penultimate time, with the immortal words of Joe Strummer...

"London calling to the faraway towns; now war is declared, and battle come down..."
