2nd August 2017

There was only one contender for MetalTalk's Gig Of The Week this week and it's the festival of festivals, Heavy Metal's very own Mecca, Headbanger's Holy Land, the biggest and best Metal fest in the world.

It's back to the glory of Germany as Wacken Open Air kicks off Wednesday with performances by Flotsam And Jetsam, Annihilator, Crowbar and Heavy Metal stalwarts The Boomtown Rats.

Wednesday's bill also includes Ugly Kid Joe and plenty of activity in Wackinger Village including fireshows, cagefights, the warrior's car drive and a show by the wonderful Pyrohex before the two main stages open on Thursday at 3.00pm German time with Skyline the first to plug in to the biggest and baddest PA in the known universe.

Then it's time for Ross The Boss to blow those speakers with rock'n'roll before Europe and Status Quo warm up Planet Earth's biggest stage for Accept, who will terrorise the Wacken masses in their own Teutonically tantalising way with the biggest show of their impressive career so far.

Just after the Ross The Boss Band finish their set, Ross will be bestowed with the very first Global Metal Ambasador award, a very special honour from The Hall Of Heavy Metal History. The ceremony will be officiated by Total Rock's Whitney Alyson Ribbins and MetalTalk Editor-In-Chief Steve Göldby from the Harder Stage at 4.45pm German Time, 3.45 UK Time.

Catch all the action live at it happens on the Wacken TV stream right here.

Accept's gig could well be the absolute highlight of Wacken 2017 as the German Metal pioneers are playing a three part set. Part One will bring fans a classic Accept set, packed with new and old hits with Accept premiering songs from their new album, 'The Rise Of Chaos', which is released on Friday.

Part Two sees another premiere: Wolf Hoffmann will be playing tracks from his solo album, 'Headbangers Symphony', released in 2016, with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra for the very first time. On this record, Wolf has covered famous pieces by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi and Mozart, in a Metal guise.

And in Part Three, all elements can be seen and heard together: Accept will make the holy Wacken ground shake by sharing the stage with the orchestra, supported by a complex multimedia show.

We may be feeling like we died and went to heaven after Wacken Friday because it all kicks off with Warrant at 11.00am before Evil Scarecrow, Skull Fist, Grave Digger, Grand Magus, Trivium, Megadeth and Marilyn Manson lay waste to a cowd of 75,000 with another million watching live on

Germany closes on Sundays due to antiquated bullshit religious laws but the Metal comes harder and faster on day four with Powerwolf, Beyond The Black, Alice Cooper, Tankard, British Lion and Orange Goblin all due to conquer Wacken before Viking ships come out of the mist as Amon Amarth head back to northern shores.

There are another hundred or so bands playing Wacken 2017 that we haven't mentioned here so stay tuned to our live reports from the world's greatest Heavy Metal festival.

Wacken Winter Nights 2018 takes place between February 23rd and 25th 2018 and the great news is that you can now experience a full-on, top class German Metal Festival easily and affordably.

It only takes an hour to fly to Hamburg from London and we've had longer journeys than that within the capital and they were certainly more expensive than the £33 air ticket that just appeared in our 'flights to Wacken Winter Nights' search.

Wacken Winter Nights is organised by the same team who are responsible for the world's greatest Metal festival, Wacken-Open-Air and the 2018 bill includes Skyclad, Orphaned Land, Elvenking, Finntroll, Grave Digger, Aeverium, Comes Vagantes, Coppelius, Corvus Corax, Die Pressgëng, Elvellon, Heimataerde, Hell-O-Matic, Ignis Fatuu, Ingrimm, Irdorath, Johnny Deathshadow, Krayenzeit, Letzte Instanz, Mr Hurley und die Pulveraffen, Pampatut, Pat Razket, Schandmaul, Sündenrausch, The Aberlour's, The Moon And The Nightspirit, Torfrock, Visions Of Atlantis, Vroudenspil, Wind Rose and more.

Besides this rich billing of superb Metal bands, there is so much more to see in the festival area including the medieval market and also the walking acts and jugglers you will meet at the theme worlds, including Robert Blake, three-time World Cup winner of street magic.

Wacken Winter Nights is something not to be missed and you can check out the amazing ticket and accommodation prices right here.

We just priced up the whole four day trip with hotels, flights, shuttles and festival tickets for less than £300 and we don't think you will get a better value festival than that, anywhere.

MetalTalk recently sat down with Wacken founder and owner Thomas Jensen and that interview will be online next week and it's a fascinating insight into how Wacken originated from nothing to become the world's premiere Heavy Metal event.
