RISE TO REMAIN: 'CITY OF VULTURES'

megadeth peace sells

I'd been meaning to review this album for quite a while. The buzz going quietly round was that this new band, signed to EMI and readying themselves for the release of their debut album on September 5th, were quite something special but after a fabulous (and admittedly rather excessive) weekend at Bloodstock, I succumbed to the evil flu which rendered me a dishevelled wreck for nearly a fortnight.

The reason I knew things were getting better was when, whilst sniffling my way through a pile of CDs for review, I suddenly found myself bouncing round the sitting room and getting rather lively!

The cause of this sudden activity?, 'City of Vultures', pure and simple.

From blitzing intro and the roaring guttural vocals, this band manage to slip between different musical styles with sublime ease, throwing in hooks galore alongside some seriously ripping Metal and keeping a fabulous balance between the both, without taking the easy way out and going soft but taking risks throughout the whole album.

Formed originally in 2006 under the monicker Halide, Rise To Remain came fully into being in 2008 and have spent the last couple of years honing their talent with the release of three EPs to critical acclaim pretty much across the board, and UK Tours including appearances at Download and Sonisphere Festivals.

Featuring Austin Dickinson on Vocals, Ben Tovey and Will Homer on Guitars, Joe Copcutt on Bass and Pat Lundy on Drums, these guys have come up with a blisteringly unique bunch of songs, belying the short time that they've been together, on an album that should see them start to scale some seriously decent heights!

Brimming full with grit, angst, passion and melodies, 'City Of Vultures' has huge scope, from the brutally unforgiving 'The Serpent', the savage bitterness of 'City Of Vultures' through to the anthemic 'This Day Is Mine' and the rocking 'Talking In Whispers', this is an album that continues to surprise play after play, the second you think you've got them sussed, they throw in a curveball and swing away from the norm.

rise to remain

Finishing with a flourish on a cracking re-recording of the lead track from their 2010 EP, 'Bridges Will Burn', this is quite simply a stormer of an album (let alone a debut one!) that I'd recommend to anyone, and with a headline tour in the offing I for one am seriously looking forward to seeing them play live. It's going to be one hell of a show!
