Swathed in mystery and darkness, and who can resist that, comes the debut release 'My Bones Hold A Stillness', a chunk of blackened Death Doom from Californian's Vrtra, that is alleged to be the "stuff of nightmares".

They describe their music as: "A nightmarish and horrific kaleidoscope of sound that seamlessly brings together the brooding wretchedness of Black Metal bands like Deathspell Omega, Dragged Into Sunlight, and Blut Aus Nord, the cavernous and heathen below of the blackest and most abstract Death Metal as seen in behemoths like Dead Congregation and Diocletian and the abysmal moods of Atmospheric Doom and Black Metal that come straight from the teachings of bands like Neurosis, Disembowelment, Winter, Unearthly Trance and Altar of Plagues. The end result comes to life in the form of massive and swirling compositions of levitating dark matter that devour the listener in a firestorm of boundless and foreboding sonic magnificence."

Quite a claim by this mysterious quartet, known only by their initials, A, Z, M and A, but intrigue aside it gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect, as well as being a claim that's not totally unfounded.

The album consists of three tracks spanning thirty minutes in total and which whilst it won't actually give you nightmares, it is a damn fine listen, ultimately the only really important factor.

It's a crushing, dark and atmospherically all encompassing release that is at times moody; all three tracks are well constructed and delivered and filled with content that that feeds your imagination.

The tracks have a sound that is all encompassing with a rich degree of depth, the multi layered 'Perpetually Hag Ridden' has haunting backing vocals over dirty riffs and lead work that courses over that, at times coming in heavy and brutal, others sublimely dark and haunting.

A distorted repeat is married with the sinister vocal growl on 'The Cold Suffocating Dark Goes On Forever' with heavy riffs that are utterly crushing. Title track 'My Bones Hold A Stillness' in places takes on a haunting, slightly progressive and psychedelic edge with distorted lead work, hypnotic backing vocals and building repeat that rises to a frenzy then ebbs back rhythmically.

'My Bones Hold A Stillness' was recorded at Earthtone Studios in Sacramento, CA by Pat Hills, mixed at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, CA by Greg Wilkinson, mastered at Audiosiege in Portland, OR by Brad Boatright and features artwork layout by 'view from the coffin'. The album is released by Sentient Ruin and is available on Amazon for the bargain price of £3.49 right here.
